About us

Established in 2025

The need for a project like IC-Pac was discussed during a session at the International Conference for Regional Climate – CORDEX in Trieste Italy in 2023. Following this, a group of interested scientists continued working toward a coordinated, collaborative project to address the climate change information needs of small Islands.

In 2024 this group, led by Professor Jason Evans, formulated a project to do this initially in the Pacific, with the intention to repeat the exercise for island groups in other ocean basins at a future date.

At the end of 2024 the Island Climate – Pacific (IC-Pac) project proposal was officially endorsed by the Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling EXperiment (CORDEX), an element of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP), as a Flagship Pilot Study. At this time Dr Christophe Menkes joined Jason as co-lead of IC-Pac.

Mission

The IC-Pac mission is to provide climate change projections that reflect changes to key island climate processes and provide the information needed in climate change risk assessment and adaptation work.

Vision

The IC-Pac vision is to create the first km-scale resolution, multi-model ensemble of climate change projections for a region covering many Pacific island nations and territories. To use these projections to improve our understanding of island climate processes, how they will change in the future, and the impact of this on human and natural systems.
